Wisbech almost made a stunning comeback as they fell to another NE14 Hockey East Premier A defeat.
Early errors gifted West Herts a two-goal lead and they grabbed a third from a short corner just as Wisbech began to come to terms with the bouncy p
itch. There cause wasn't helped when Jon Shippey was shown a yellow card.
Wisbech started the second half looking for a goal to bring them back into the game. Sadly they were caught on the break and fell four goals behind.
Drew Harvey set up Brad Apted with a powerful run and good pass to get Wisbech on the scoresheet. Sam Markille then gave them real hope with a goal from a short corner.
West Herts got a fifth, again catching Wisbech as they pushed forward in search of more goals. Wisbech also had Karle Belding yellow carded but fought on.
A second Markille goal was followed by a breathtaking reverse stick strike from Apted and Wisbech were back within a goal with a couple of minutes left. West Herts scored with the last hit of the game to complete a 6-4 victory.
This weekend Wisbech host champions St. Albans (2.30)
Wisbech 3rds 2
Ely 2nds 3
Wisbech lost out in this game but thanks to results elsewhere though, Wisbech's promotion is now confirmed, and they will play next year in North West 3.
Wisbech came out all guns blazing against Ely this weekend. However, Ely soaked up Wisbech's enthusiasm, and countered strongly, looking dangerous with nearly every move. It wasn't long before Ely started converting chances to goals, and they quickly went 2-0 up.
Wisbech dug deep, and managed to claw things back to 2-2 thanks to goals from Sam Dunn and Jimmy Turner. Unfortunately, the comeback was short-lived and Ely wrapped things up with a well taken goal.
Man of the match was Josh Holmes.
Rutland 4ths 0
Wisbech 5ths 15
Wisbech travelled to Rutland in the NE14Hockey 6NW(S) league with a young team having enlisted the help of parent to get them there. With the earlier fixture being cancelled by Rutland, Wisbech were unsure what awaited them but it was rather an anti climax to come up against such a weak opposition.
The goals started flowing within the first five minutes when slick Wisbech passing allowed Ollie Brown to score his first. The passing continued and with good commitment to winning the 50:50 ball the Wisbech goal tally by half time was up to nine without reply.
The same pattern continued in the second half with another six goals scored by Wisbech.
In total there were six goals to Ollie Brown, with hat-tricks for Danny Howard and Hugo Atkins and single goals for Will Greenwood, Jason Esser and Howard Atkins.
Next fixture: Peterborough 7ths (h) 11.30am start
