Glebelands Primary School now has an allotment after the community stepped in to lend a hand.

After an appeal put out to help turn a piece of land in the Chatteris school grounds into an allotment, parents and volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got to work.

In conjunction with Meadows Community Centre, the school received a grant from Fenland Council’s Youth Awards Scheme to cover the cost of buying equipment for the allotment but labour was not included.

So parents built the shed, constructed raised beds and put up a fence. A donation of plants from Delflands Nursery in Doddington then populated the allotment.

Allotment co-ordinator Grace Field said: “It was hard work but we managed to have a few laughs along the way. Children came out and worked alongside their parents and by the end of the day, we were finished and our new allotment was ready for planting.”

Grace thanked everyone who gave up their time and said without them, completing the allotment would not have been possible.
