RESIDENTS of a March retirement complex can look forward to cheaper fuel bills after a massive renewable energy system was activated on Friday.

Lady Mary Archer was the guest of honour at Upwell Park and officially switched on the extensive photovoltaic system, located on the roof of the Snowmountain retirement care home and its 66 care bungalows.

Believed to be the largest in the Cambridgeshire area, the output from the photovoltaic system – which was designed and installed by Riomay Ltd – will create enough energy to cover the lighting and cooking for all the dwellings, or about 20 per cent of the overall usage of the care home.

The property and land is owned by Snowmountain Enterprises Limited, a local family run business.

Snowmountain Enterprises Ltd have passed on the savings from the solar electricity generated to the elderly tenants of the 66 bungalows, allowing them to save hundreds of pounds on their fuel bills.

Essentially the 138kWp system should be easily capable of a CO2 saving of 75,000 kg per annum.
