Hunting Act is 'illiberal'

I write further to the letter in the Citizen February 24 regarding hunting with dogs.

I would like to state the case for repeal. There are four main reasons why the Hunting Act should be removed from the statute books.

The Hunting Act does not protect wild mammals from unnecessary suffering; it simply prohibits certain methods of management despite their being no evidence that they are less humane than the legal alternatives.

The Hunting Act is a confusing law. The exemptions are bizarre – why can you not hunt a hare, but you can hunt a rabbit? Why can you hunt a rat, but not a mouse? Why is it legal to use two dogs to flush to a gun, but three is breaking the law?

You can use terriers to protect pheasants but if the same terrier was used to protect lambs you would be in breach of the law.

The Hunting Act is an illiberal law. The Hunting Act was driven through parliament in a single day, breaching protocol. It was then forced through the Lords with the Parliament Act – legislation that was initially intended to pass finance bills.

Finally the Hunting Act is a divisive law, the government failed to tackle real issues affecting rural communities, instead wasting 700 hours of parliamentary time on hunting, they spent just seven hours debating whether to go to war in Iraq!

I am proud to hunt and I abide by the law. I urge people of Fenland to join me in hunting for repeal of this piece of legislation.
