I’m proud to live in Wisbech, are you?

I DON’T know how anyone else feels, but I’ve had enough of outsiders knocking Wisbech. The latest Daily Mail ‘Baltic Mafia’ story (Citizen February 1) is the final straw. It’s absolutely laughable - let alone being a slur on everyone who lives in Wisbech.

Let’s start talking the town ‘up’ instead of ‘down’. This is a great place to live.

It’s one of the most beautiful towns in England with some of the friendliest people you’ll find anywhere and they far outweigh the vocal minority of troublemakers.

I’ve no idea what proportion of our population is from Eastern Europe - and I don’t much care. The majority of people in this area work hard, no matter what their ethnic background. And let’s not forget that without Fenland people (of all races) to work the fields and farms, a large part of the UK would go hungry.

This town has much to be proud of. It’s the birthplace of social improvement, as we all know, the anti-slavery movement and the National Trust had their origins here.

Unlike many other towns in this country it has managed to keep its soul, in having a well-preserved, visually-stunning and historic town centre.

As far as I’m concerned it’s the centre of the world and it has a great future. I’m immensely proud and fortunate to live here.

Anyone else feel the same way?

RICHARD HUMPHRIES

I thoroughly respect Mr Humphries view, but I must disagree with him. The comment left by 'Let Down Local" sadly sums up the attitude of many (but not all) local people. Bitter by the fact their town has been left to go downhill and unwelcoming to outsiders. The above comment instantly assumes the writer is wealthy purely because of his thoughts. To drive through, Wisbech is a pretty town, with a gorgeous river bank and historically rich town centre but there is nothing to invite people to stop. No shopping, no decent restaurants or cafés, no feeling of safety. For Wisbech to flourish it needs significant town centre investment, from both the Council and retailers, and it needs more people to learn to take pride in their surroundings. Once Wisbech becomes truly accepting of its Multiculturalism, and embraces other cultures and outsiders (I came from elsewhere in England and I've never felt welcome) then perhaps it can become a true Capital of the Fens. But for now it's somewhere that is avoided unless absolutely necessary, which will only push the town into further economic decline. I hope more people begin to feel like Mr Humphries soon and in the meantime, I can only hope that his letter inspires other people to take an interest and get involved in their town. Until then I just pray that nobody takes this attitude away from Mr Humphries. In fact, I pray he gets made Mayor and fixes the place up.

Sorry but is this Wisbech in Cambridgeshire you are talking about??? The town I live in is an Eastern European dumping ground. The town centre is full of shops no one wants to shop in (charity shops, betting shops, pound shops, we even have a pawn shop - woopy do) Our local school is fulll of kids who don't speak English and the pass rates for GCSE released this week are horrendous. 23% of the 1200 kids (give or take a few) get 5 GCSE's at C or above. Compare that to the Grammar School whose results are 97% but the fees are beyond most of the parents who live and work in and around Wisbech. The park is a no go area and thats in the daytime as well as at night. No one with any sence walks in Wisbech after dark. Wisbech is a beautiful place with many historic buildings but wake up and smell the coffee. This is Wisbech 2012 the place you talk about is in Disneyland.

He is probably a wealthy landowner, and supporter of the outsider Tory MP, who has no concern about how our town has become a dumping ground for the EU!

May i ask where do you live address? I ask this as i wonder how many EU' people you have living next door to you or do you live in the posh area away from all of what we have to endure!!! As for stating that the town is visually stunning ARE YOU BLIND to the fact that multicutural shops, charity shops, pound shops, betting shops and estate agents dont make for a wonderful town!! We are all aware so i do not know how you do not know that the ratio is 1 to 4 English to EU's in this town. When you walk through the town its like walking in a foreign country. Every language being spoken and then the odd English voice as you pass by.
