'Shameful episode' of Post Office cuts

APPARANTLY, officers at Fenland Council have been looking closely at the criteria which has to be met before Post Office closures can take place.

I obtained a copy of the criteria laid down by the DTI before the PO could embark on any closures.

The relevant section of the criteria where Fenland is concerned states: 99% of the total population in deprived urban areas to be within one mile of their nearest PO outlet, and 95% of the total rural population of the UK be within three miles of their nearest outlet.

The proposed closures for Fenland must be very marginal on the basis of that criteria, particularly in the case of Benwick and Christchurch.

I still consider the Government, via the DTI Postal Affairs Dept, to be the prime motivating force in this shameful episode which hits the disabled, elderly and underprivileged hardest.

Post Office Ltd have merely been the executioners.

REG KEMP,

Scargells Lane,

March.
