Shooting season begun

May I through your paper bring to the public's attention - if they were not already aware - the shooting season has started.

Millions of game birds will be put to death in the name of sport.

While feeding the birds, a young pheasant came struggling up to me, he had been released from a pen starving and he had been injured in the neck.

At the point of writing this I have the young bird in a pen trying to save it through hand feeding.

Will someone please tell me what people get out of this sport?

The usual story I get is that it's a country sport and we have done it for generations. Well my family has lived and farmed in the country for generations and we have never taken part in it.

Twenty plus years ago pheasants and partridges could be heard calling at any time of the day, but no longer, it is becoming very baron out there.

Me? I will endeavour to continue to do my part in trying to do all I can to save what little wildlife we have left.

There are national groups that have the same opinion and will help; also most police authorities have a wildlife officer.

My email is juliankirk@hotmail.com should any one wish to discuss this with me or write to my address.
