Welney baby boom
THIS Spring don't miss the baby boom at Welney Wetland Centre.
Ducklings, goslings, cygnets and other babies are beginning to hatch and can now be seen around the grounds.
The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Welney provides the habitat required by many of the summer waders and the resident mute swans to breed and nurture their offspring.
As the duckling and diving season starts at Welney you can observe the birds doing their stunning displays, such as lapwings diving and tumbling through the air and avocets darting across the pools in attempts to attract mates and defend territories.
Further into the season you can see the star attractions – the ducklings – emerging from their nests.
Out on the reserve there is a Duckling and Diving Trail to explore and lots of fun to be had at the pond dipping area.
There's a chance for visitors to create ducklings with squares of fabric and weave paper nests.
WWT is also celebrating the centenary of Jemima Puddleduck this year by holding a Jemima Puddleduck Day on Sunday May 25. So there will be lots of activities to enjoy whilst celebrating Jemima's 100th birthday.
For the keener birdwatchers there are many other activities running during this season, including an opportunity to witness the dawn chorus with wardens who will help you to identify the songs of the morning birds on May 25.
Or if you are completely taken with spring why not go along to Wild About Spring on Sunday, May 4, where the wardens will introduce visitors to summer migrants during a guided walk and presentation.
