EACH year I go across to cut a meadow near Stanground lock and every year at this time I like to watch the wild geese fly in across the fen towards Peterborough.
They always come across above the brick works and McCain factory.

This year they have now put up four wind turbines at the factory.

As I watched a flock of 100 plus geese come across they had to make a quick change of direction as they flew through the blades.

It was like they did not see that the blades were turning.

One of the birds was hit by the blade and still managed to fly another 500 yards or so before it landed in a field.

I went across to find it but due to the height of the vegetation I could not see it.

This made me wonder how many birds are being hit by these blades across the fens and are managing to fly on before dying a slow and painful death.

Thousands of birds fly across the fen each year, geese especially often fly by night.

..I wonder how many birds will die a slow and painful death if we don't do something about climate change?? I work at a power station, and am only too aware of the horrible death birds, usually pigeons, suffer when they get trapped against the huge air intake grills and are unable to escape against the suction, these birds die a slow, terrifying death. About 6 million birds die every year as a result of collisions with man made structures, be it 747's or skyscrapers. 3,000 migrating birds died on one night when they flew in to the cooling towers of a power plant in fog. Puts wind farms in to perspective doesn't it.
