AS far back as 2001 on the issue of paid parking in the four Fenland market towns, I told Fenland District Council (free of charge) it would not work because in Chatteris and Whittlesey there are not enough municipal parking spaces.
In 2002, in these very columns, I told them again it would not work, however, they decided to spend £25,000 of taxpayers' money on a consultation to find out.
The result of the consultation was to remain a secret from those whose money paid for i
t until just recently, and the outcome was the same as I had predicted seven years earlier and many times since.
On the issue of Chatteris and the underused Furrowfields car park, I wrote to both Cllr Melton when he was leader of FDC and again to Cllr Harper since he has been leader, suggesting the Furrowfields car park be used as the Bus Terminus as opposed to the Police Station areas in East Park Street.
This would ensure the people who commute on the buses would park in the underused Furrowfield car park and alleviate the much-needed parking spaces in and around the town shopping area.
To date my suggestion has gone unheeded.
With the present building boom and the proposed building plans this town will need all the parking spaces it can find, and my suggestion might help our town traders to increase their business and attract more people to shop with them.
It is no good hoping the infrastructure will be put in place before all the proposed building goes ahead because we are over ten years behind.
REG WENN,
Chatteris.
