I read the letter from Terry Schooling who appears to be critical of Chatteris Town Council in general and myself in particular.
I have the impression that Mr Schooling may be blissfully ignorant of the fact that for very many years, Chatteris residents have been dicing with death due to the complete absence of any safe place to cross the A141.
A situation which I have been seeking to improve for some considerable time.
There are something in the region of 80 households plus several more recent homes in Doddington Road, added to which a considerable number of people live on the traveller site west of the by-pass.
If these unfortunate souls wish to go to town on foot or cycle they are forced to run the gauntlet of the A141 or the A141/A142 roundabout.
Similarly, those who live/work in the Honeysome area, and the local allotment holders, have to cross the A141. There is currently no pedestrian safety provision.
One method of obtaining highway improvements is attaching conditions to a commercial planning approval.
Had approval for a supermarket off the A141 been granted, some much-needed road safety improvements could have been applied as a condition.
Mr Schooling may not be aware that Cambs County Council budgets very limited amounts for road improvements. Sadly, in the past when more funds were available our local councillors did not see fit to seek improvements - a matter upon which I am unable to comment as I was neither a resident nor a councillor here at the time.
Concerning the proposed bus service, I am of course aware this represented only a temporary measure, but had Mr Schooling read the Lib Dem Election Manifesto, he might have noticed that improving bus services ranks high on our list of priorities.
I would like to advise Mr Schooling that I, for one, most certainly have knocked on his door.
