Re 'Cabbies join ranks to fight council plans' (September 17). Leaving aside the question of 'good service', sounding the horn to announce your arrival is not a misdemeanour, it is illegal – for good reason.
It clearly states in the Highway Code that the horn should not be used when stationary, at night, and should only be used as a warning.
It is as illegal as:

  • riding bicycles on pavements (it's dangerous to both cyclists and pedestrians)

  • driving on pavements (it damages them if they have not been strengthened and the kerb dropped; it is also not good for your tyres)

  • parking on pavements (as above)

  • and parking within ten metres of a junction (for all manner of safety reasons)

GRAHAM MCDONALD,
High Street,
Manea.
