Strain has clouded his good sense

When I was on Wisbech Town Council, Coun Farmer and I crossed swords, in a friendly manner, on a number of issues.
However he adamantly opposed the street drinking ban, which I proposed at the Town Assembly in 2005.
I put forward this proposal after being approached by a number of Wisbech residents, many from outside my constituency. After the meeting I received many letters supporting the proposed ban.
In your article of August 27 Coun Farmer makes a number of outlandish comments (I can only think that the strain of being Mayor has clouded his usual good sense).
He contends that anyone with alcohol could be arrested, including those carrying unopened cans of beer home from the supermarket.
Come off it Jonathon, this would include the drayman carrying beer to the pub where we, in company with other councillors, have enjoyed a drink!
Common sense tells us that the ban would be targeted at disorderly street drinking, no matter whatever section of the community the offender comes from.
As for Mr Farmer's suggestion that we should ask for the ban to apply to the whole of Fenland – where Wisbech leads, others will follow.

Waterlees Road,
