Bill’s new book
Having already researched and written two books on Outwell, local historian, William (Bill) Smith has now turned his attention to Upwell and, after ten years’ work, aims to set the record straight on a few local mysteries and myths.
“Many Upwell locals asked me when I was going to write a book about Upwell,” says Bill “but being an old boy from the Pingle I originally thought I wasn’t the best qualified person for the job.”
Historical facts provided the solution as, up to the late 12th century, Upwell and Outwell were originally one place (the market town of Welle) so Bill’s latest book, ‘Discovering Upwell’ is a continuation of his fascinating research into this still-divided, Fenland community.
So, where was Marmont Priory? Where was the White Hart public house? How old are the Barnack stone cottages on Town Street? You may think you know the answer to these questions but, to be sure, you can buy a copy of ‘Discovering Upwell’ at the launch and signing event between 11am and 4pm at Upwell, British Legion Hall on Saturday 24 November.
The launch event is followed by an evening presentation at 7pm to 9.30pm at Upwell Village Hall when Bill will be showing and discussing photographs and images from his book – many of which have never been seen in public before. Doors open at 6.30pm, tickets are £3 and all proceeds will go to the Welle Creek Trust.
