Exhibition plan for dig findings
The Wisbech Castle dig is now complete and it appears to have found the remains of the Bishop's Palace.
The team from Oxford Archaeology East are analysing their findings and examining the artefacts unearthed.
A massive team of volunteers clocked up 485 hours between them - almost 25,000 worth of work - and 20 school visits were made to the site, involving 740 schoolchildren in activities.
The dig uncovered parts of the palace below the ground and underneath the walls of the castle vaults.
Discoveries made in the vaults towards the end of the dig highlighted a need for further investigation in that area.
Geoff Wilkinson, project co-ordinator, said: "We await with anticipation the findings of the archaeological team. They have shared their expertise so willingly with all our volunteers and passed on their enthusiasm to so many local schoolchildren.
"We particularly thank the volunteer 'diggers' and 'washers'. They have been incredibly hardworking and totally committed to the project.
They have become good friends through sharing in this project and are determined to keep up the good work as a local group with a particular interest in Wisbech Castle."
The findings of the project, which was funded by Heritage Lottery, are expected to be featured in a major exhibition at Wisbech and Fenland Museum in due course.
