WISBECH salon owner Sharon Howlett has set up a national month-long event to raise awareness of skin cancer and money for the Sun Awareness Campaign.
Sharon, owner of Choyé par Sharon's in Gorefield, set up the special August event after talking to fellow proprieter Fiona Lloyd-Morgan, of Essex, about a problem with her son.

Sharon explained that Fiona's son had a mole, which was being investigated by doctors. During the long patient wait for the results the pair discussed the dangers of skin cancer – which kills someone in the UK every four hours.

Fortunately the results came back negative.

After deciding to create the event, the pair have enlisted the help of 85 salons around the country and received the backing of the British Skin Foundation and the British Association of Dermatologists.

Starting on Friday, August 1, and running through to Sunday, August 31, the event will see 10 per cent of spray tan takings given to the campaign.

Sharon believes that if she can can make a difference to one life then her work has been worthwhile and that's why she made the decision to join the campaign.

She said: "Everyone wants to enjoy the summer, so let's do it safely whilst staying healthy, and raise money for a wonderful cause along the way.

"If you do this sort of thing on your own, you don't have a loud enough voice. But with lots of people there's more noise.

"I want to let people know the danger they put themselves, and their children, in when they send them to school without sun protection. Or allowing them to play on the beach all day turning red, because they did not realise how to use sun protection effectively.

"We haven't got a target for raising the money, but we hope to inform as many people as possible. We've had a great response so far."

If you would like to make a donation, or want to book a spray tan, you can pop into the salon or call Sharon on 01945-870697.

If you want to find out more about the event log on to www.safetansummer.com for more details and enter the competitions.
