A WOMAN living in a Welney care home has celebrated her 100th birthday.
Gladys Mayes, who lives at Marifa Lodge Care Home, celebrated the prestigious milestone on Monday with a party attended by family, friends and other residents.
Gladys Mayes (nee Sizeland) was born in Wells-next-the-Sea, North Norfolk, on February 1, 1910.
She had two brothers, Billy and Fred, and three sisters, Louie, Dolly and Gertie, who are now all deceased.
Gladys's mother died young and she looked after the family.
Gladys married Walter Mayes in the spring of 1933.
Walter was a worker on Temple's farm and played for Wells Town Football club.
Theirs was a very happy marriage until Walter died in 1981. Although the couple had hoped to have children, unfortunately there were none.
Before moving to Marifa, Gladys enjoyed singing the popular songs of the day. She loved her cats and flowers brought her great joy.
Gladys was 94 when she moved to Welney and staff say she still enjoys singing and being with people.
