THE family of well-known March businessman David Dobson are planning to hold a charity fundraising event in his memory.
Mr Dobson died of Mesothelioma – a cancer caused by asbestos – two weeks ago and his funeral was held on Saturday at St Peter’s Church in March.
The 68-year-old entrepreneur was diagnosed with the disease last September and had battled bravely, even under-going pioneering surgery in a bid to beat the illness.
But sadly he lost his fight for life on Tuesday, July 23.
Mr Dobson, who was married to Gill and was father to Claire (29) and Andrew (25), was best known for his businesses, Davern Workwear and Dobson’s clothes shop in High Street.
He launched Davern Workwear with his brother Vernon and later purchased his father’s High Street shop.
He used the same determination to battle his illness as he did to build his multi-million pound business, which at one time was one of the largest employers in Fenland employing more than 300 machinists.
Mesothelioma is a virulent form of cancer, which can lie dormant for many years before developing.
It is caused by minute asbestos fibres entering the body and ironically the family believe he could have picked up asbestos at a time when he was producing protective clothing for those working in the industry and he used to visit sites to promote the range.
Mr Dobson was a leading designer, manufacturer and distributor of work wear and his family will be carrying on that tradition promising it will be business as usual for both the shop and Davern Workwear.
And the family have also said they will be holding some kind of open garden charity event for Macmillan.
“It was something that dad talked about within the last month of his life and we would really like to do something in his memory.
“Macmillan is a superb charity that does a lot to help people with cancer and so we want to do something to support them,” said David’s daughter Claire, who paid tribute to her dad, saying he died knowing he had done everything he could to try to beat the disease.
