A NEW application for a major supermarket in Chatteris has been submitted to Fenland District Council.
Over the past few months, applicants Harrier Developments Limited have been in discussion with Fenland District and Cambs County Councils to address the concerns that led to an earlier application for the store on Fenland Way being rejected.

Some
changes have been made to the plans, including highway works and a safe pedestrian linkage to the town centre.

Harrier Developments have also been actively involved with the local community, explaining the proposals, and an exhibition was held in July.

A questionnaire at the exhibition, completed by 271 people, showed over 99 per cent would use and support a new foodstore. Similar levels of support were expressed for the pedestrian underpass and a new petrol station.

If the store goes ahead, around 200 jobs would be created, bringing £2 million extra income into Chatteris.

Harrier Developments are planning to make a donation to the Fenland Association for Community Transport (FACT) to provide an extra bus six days a week for residents not able to walk or cycle to the store, in addition to the current Dial-a-Ride service.

Harrier Developments have simultaneously submitted a separate application for the relocation of Travis Perkins from its current premises on London Road, Chatteris to the land adjacent to the proposed foodstore.

The proposal is derived from the operational requirements for a new builders' merchant.
