KIND hearted volunteer Walter Chamberlain came up trumps when he won the first prize of £7,500 in the Alzheimer's Society Spring Raffle.
Walter (86), from Christchurch, supports many charities and has spent every Friday for the past nine years visiting patients on wards at North Cambs Hospital in Wisbech and his weekends are taken up going to see people in 16 care homes across Fenland and Norfolk. Most of the people he visits in the homes are those he made friends with during their stay at hospital.

Walter supports many charities including Friends of Wisbech Hospital and has been a member of the local Fenland branch of the Alzheimer’s Society for the past two years and buys the raffle tickets whenever the promotion is running. Tina Kierman, Fenland branch manager, said: “It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.

“Walter has supported the branch since becoming a member and is such a tonic to those staying in hospital. He gives his time so freely and has a kind and generous spirit.”

The branch holds the official society raffle two to three times a year.

Tina said: “It’s quite a large administrative undertaking for a small branch but it’s worth it when this happens.

“It’s also much-needed income for the branch as we receive 100% of sales and donations on every ticket we sell.”

Walter’s generosity continued as he even gave the Fenland branch £500 of his winnings, which will be used to support local people living with dementia, their carers and families.

Walter has decided to use the rest of his winnings to buy himself a new car – so he can keep up with his visits.
