MORE than 1,000 local people have applied for jobs at the new replacement Tesco store in March and all 150 new vacancies have been filled.
The jobs cover all positions from checkout staff to senior management and these are in addition to the 200 existing store staff who will move over from the current store on Hostmoor Avenue.

Store manager Graham Lee said Tesco had been hugely impr
essed with the quality of candidates who attended two special open days and presentations in the build up to the new store being launched on October 20.

In the midst of busy preparations Graham took time out this week to officially receive the keys to the new superstore from Paul Mangan of main contractor Carters.

The new store is 50,000 square feet and preparations are being made so that the old store can be demolished and turned into additional car park space.

The turnaround will be quick with the staff at the store having just one week to transfer all produce from the old store into the new one, with over a thousand different lines of products.

The new store will be able to provide additional services to customers including a pharmacy, clothing ranges, a new Costa coffee, a fresh bakery, an electrical range, a photo processing shop, and four new pumps at its petrol station including for the first time, fast card payment pumps.

Mr Lee added: "We are currently planning activities to celebrate the end of the work by investing in good causes in the surrounding community, details of which will be made known after we open the new store."

Store opening times will be 24 hours from Mondays 8am until Saturdays 10pm and Sundays 10am until 4pm.
