IMPROVEMENTS to a busy access road have caused the opening of a new Wisbech supermarket to be delayed.
The new Lidl's store is almost complete but discussions on what to do to improve the highway has led to the opening being postponed to at least mid-August.

A spokesman for the firm explained the store application involved them providing extended improvements to Cromwell Road.

Initially Lidl had hoped to provide a larger roundabout at the existing junction near the Tesco superstore, but discussions with highways have resulted in a decision to introduce a series of linked traffic lights.

The spokesman explained the details of the scheme, which will also take in the new Cromwell Park development at the former greyhound stadium, have now been agreed and the work will begin as soon as a contractor has been appointed.

"It has been very disappointing and frustrating as we would like to be open and trading. It has finally been agreed and work will begin as soon as possible.

"We don't have a fixed date for the opening at this stage, but our best guess is that it will be sometime around mid-August," added the spokesman.
