THE Wisbech Rose Fair 2009 kicked off today (Wednesday) under blazing sunshine and a lovely blue sky.
Visitors have already started to arrive for the biggest annual event in the Wisbech calendar, with hundreds more expected over the next few days.
The churches are packed with dazzling displays of flowers and the stalls are set up in the gardens of St Peter and St Paul's Church on Church Terrace.
Peckover House, Octavia Hill's Birthplace House, Wisbech and Fenland Museum, Elgoods Brewery and Wisbech Castle and Pump Room have all opened their doors to the public with special events.
The judging for the Best Dressed Window competition also took place this morning, with Sue Ryder Care emerging as the winner for their Blue Spot and 60s themed display.
The competition was tough, with eight entries submitted from around the town centre. There was a lot of vinyl on show, with the 60s being the most popular theme.
Sue Ryder manager Marilyn Batrick put in a lot of work in the window, handmaking a juke box for the display, and she was aided in her efforts by the shop volunteers and assistant manager Anita Saunders.
Marilyn said: "We're overwhelmed with being awarded first place. It's made it worth all the hard work. I spent hours and hours in my garden making the juke box and the food."
It was Marilyn's idea to theme the window around the Blue Spot, a former cafe and music venue in Hill Street, as she used to go there. It brought back memories for several people in the street, including Wisbech Mayor Yvonne Lawrence who recalls frequenting it in her younger years.
The Salvation Army in Union Street was awarded second place for their rock and roll window and the British Heart Foundation received a Highly Commended award for their Wisbech nostalgia and nautical window.
The judges were Yvonne Lawrence and her husband Robert, Horsefair manager and Wisbech Chamber of Commerce President Kevin Smith and Beadle Alister Hopkins.
Sue Ryder Care also won the competition in 2006.
