NEW clamp-on CCTV cameras could be used to help combat anti-social problems in March's West End.
The area could be the first to get the special cameras, which use microwave technology.

The cameras can be clamped on to lamp posts and other structures and linked into the existing Fenland District Council CCTV network for 24-hour surveillance.

March Sector Inspector Robin Sissons said the cameras are a new initiative called "Rapid Cam" and they can be fixed on to existing structures to keep a watch on problem areas.

Part of West End is covered by one of the Fenland Council cameras but Insp Sissons is hoping to get a couple of these extra cameras for other parts of West End.

The move comes after residents, along with police and council representatives, formed an action group over a month ago.
Police have stepped up patrols in the West End and are working with authorities to tackle problems which were highlighted at a recent Neighbourhood Panel meeting.

These have included general rowdiness and problems with youngsters congregating on the green area and drinking alcohol in the park.

"We are intelligence gathering and police officers and support officers have been asked to walk the area on their way in and out of work," said Insp Sissons.
