YOUNG parents in Fenland attended Wisbech Fire Station for a one-day child safety workshop.
The workshop taught the students a variety of fire safety, first aid, road safety and health and safety skills – including advice on how to spot potential fire hazards in the home that could harm their children; first aid for babies and pre-school age children; how to correctly install a child car seat; and the dangers of chip pans.

It was staged by Cambs Fire and Rescue Service, in conjunction with Cambs County Council’s road safety team.

The attendees are currently studying the Nacro Young Parenting Programme in Wisbech designed to enhance all aspects of pre and post natal care and to promote positive parenting skills.

Students can gain key skills qualifications as part of the programme and support is given to help them to take the next step in their career path.

Firefighter Rob Wabe said: “This workshop has enhanced the child safety knowledge that these young parents already have. We hope it has given them the confidence to let their children play and develop their early skills in a safe environment.”

One young learner said: "It was a very helpful day, I even learned how to fit a booster seat in a car, though I don't have a baby myself – but I can now help people who do. Everything we did will stay with me forever.”
