The Rosmini Centre in Wisbech has been presented with the top volunteering award in the country.

The Lord Lieutenant, Hugh Duberly, went to the centre on Friday to present them with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Mr Duberly said: “This is a very prestigious award and very few are given out. It’s terrific it has been awarded to an organisation in Wisbech that has done so much for the town. I am thrilled to be here to make this presentation on behalf of Her Majesty.”

It is the highest award that can be given to volunteer groups and the Rosmini Centre were delighted to be given the honour.

“It is amazing,” said centre manager Anita Grodkiewicz. “It is an honour for us and for Wisbech, something really positive. It’s lovely for the volunteers.”

Sam Hosier is a project manager at the centre and said: “This is a wholly community-based award which is nice. The volunteers have had the biggest impact and this wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for them.”

Volunteers packed the Rosmini Centre for the presentation and were treated to a buffet.

Volunteer Agnes Thurstance had the honour of receiving the glass award from Mr Duberly on behalf of the centre. Agnes is well known at the Rosmini and volunteers for all sorts of activities, wherever she is needed.

Father John Doman IC, from Wisbech Catholic Church, also attended to present a framed picture of Antonio Rosmini-Serbati, after whom the centre is named. He founded the Rosminians, a Roman Catholic Order, in 1828.

The Rosmini Centre was nominated for the award by Wisbech Town Council. Supporting letters came from the Volunteer Centre Fenland and the Interfaith Forum.
