A new campaign is being launched in Wisbech to make businesses dementia aware.
Ann Marie Harmer is the local ambassador for the Purple Angel Dementia Campaign and wants to talk to as many groups and businesses as possible.
The campaign raises awareness of dementia and helps people understand the condition. It aims to make life easier for people with dementia and those that care for them.
Ann Marie explained that there is still a stigma attached to dementia and often people are misunderstood or viewed suspiciously. She herself witnessed an incident in a supermarket where an elderly man with dementia was dealt with by security staff who thought he was being aggressive.
“I want as many premises as possible to be dementia friendly so people aren’t afraid to take their loved ones out,” she said.
Ann Marie is a registered nurse and has been a dementia specialist for 27 years. She is passionate about the cause and wants to spread the word.
She is happy to speak to any groups, schools or businesses about the different kinds of dementia, symptoms that may be exhibited by people with dementia and how to approach them. They can then display the Purple Angel sticker, as pictured left.
