Demolition men have moved on to the old Wisbech Town Football ground as work on a new housing development finally gets underway – seven years after planning permission was first granted.

The four-acre Fenland Park site in Lerowe Road, which was home to the Fenmen from 1947 to 2008, is being stripped back to make way for 83 new homes.

Locally based Humphrey Demolition started clearing the grounds, including football stands and clubhouse, last week.

Planning permission was originally granted by Fenland Council in 2009 for 19 x 4-bed houses, 35 x 3-bed houses, 18 x 2-bed houses, 6 x 2-bed apartments and 5 x 1-bed apartments.

Developers renewed the planning consent in 2011, and two years ago the site was offered at auction with a guide price of £2.5 million, but now everything is in place for work to finally start.

Nearby residents supported re-development of the site once Wisbech Town agreed to re-locate to a new site on the Lynn Road.

A few people objected to the number of homes proposed, and they were also worried about the state of the old buildings. As the years passed their fears were realised as complaints piled up about the rapidly deteriorating condition of the site.
