POLICE in Wisbech are urging residents to be vigilant following a distraction burglary at a pensioner’s home in Victoria Place.
A 70-year-old man answered his door at around 2pm on February 8 to a man who said he was working on the water and needed to empty all the kitchen cupboards.
The man told the victim to go the bathroom and flush the toilet.
When the pensioner returned he found cash and two packets of cigarettes had been stolen.
The suspect is described as aged between 41 and 60, white, around 5’9” tall, with black hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a light tracksuit top and black trousers.
Police said: “Distraction burglary is a despicable crime which can be carried out in a variety of ways and often on elderly and vulnerable victims.”
Police are urging people to take extra care, be on their guard against callers, keep doors locked, install a door chain and always check a caller’s identity.
