World boxing champion Joe Calzaghe helped to open the new leisure complex at Tydd St Giles Golf & Country Club on Thursday.

Starstruck fans packed the £2 million complex at the golf club for a chance to see the famous boxer, delighting managing director Adrian Hurst.

Everyone who attended was also taken aback by the building, which was constructed by Wisbech-based company Bespoke Oak Supplies Ltd.

Joe said: “This is an amazing place. I will hopefully bring my girlfriend here in the spring. It’s a great place to really chill out and enjoy yourself.”

Personal trainer Yaba Munford, who works at the club, was lucky enough to get a pair of boxing gloves signed by Joe and said she was looking forward to working in the complex. She added that seeing the building going up had been “amazing”.

The construction of the project has been a labour of love for Bespoke Oak MD David Worrall, who came up with the design in place of the glass and steel structure originally wanted by John Morphet, from Pure Leisure Group Ltd who own the site.

David said when he showed the plans to John, who had flown in specially, he was very impressed and gave the go-ahead to have the oak-framed structure built at the club.

The massive framework was all constructed in the Wisbech workshops by ten master craftsmen bought in from across the country. There is not a single rivet holding the oak together and a stunning hammerbeam truss roof gives the impression of a church building.

To mark the opening of the facilities, families are being invited to come along and try them out during an open week that is running until Sunday, February 24.

The swimming pool, steam room and sauna will be free to try. The pool is heated with a coco jet machine which controls the water current.

Anyone purchasing membership during the open week will also receive a 20 per cent discount, with golf club members receiving 50 per cent discount.
