The new Tesco Extra store in Wisbech is on track to open in just under three weeks’ time.
The finishing touches are being put to the new building before the shelves can start to be stacked ready for the opening on Thursday, February 20.
This comes as Fenland District Council’s planning committee are due to discuss the removal of a planning condition from the original application on Wednesday.
The condition states that the new Tesco store will not open until The Light Cinema is operational. However the opening date for the cinema has been put back to May.
In order to recover its significant financial investment, Tesco needs to start trading by the end of February, which is the end of its financial year.
It has also been stated that the fit-out time for Tesco is considerably shorter than that of the cinema, due to the complex internal requirements of the cinema in aspects such as sound and quality.
Planning officers have recommended the application to remove the planning condition be approved, as they are satisfied that there is a clear commitment for the cinema to be operational.
The new Tesco store is giving a positive boost to the job market, with around 80 new jobs being created at the store. This is in addition to the 250 exisitng staff who will move over to the new store when it opens.
Kevin Chestnutt is the store manager and will head the team at the new Tesco Extra.
He said: “It is a pleasure to have so many loyal and experienced members of staff in the team. As a store we are delighted to have the opportunity to create additional jobs for our local community. We have recruited brilliant people who are about to
begin a long and successful career. My new team and I are looking forward to offering shoppers a clean, bright and spacious store with fast and friendly service.”
The store will have an opticians and a phone shop, in addition to an extended clothing department. There will also be fresh counters and a deli.
