Walsoken business Maipop Farm has applied to expand its business.

The butchery has been so successful at the Biggs Road site that owner John Stratton wants to increase the numbers of animals on the farm.

Maipop currently runs 250 laying hens, 80 chickens for meat, fattening turkeys, 25 bullocks and 40 breeding sows. Around 15 calves are also born on farm every year.

It is proposed to have 50 bullocks and 50 calves per year, with a view to building up the beef herd. The number of hens is to double to 500.

It is also proposed to expand the pig side of the business into rare breeds, such as Tamworth for ham, and keeping goats to produce a local cheese. Alpacas are another potential addition to the farm to add to the specialist meat products and to use the fleeces.

A fruit and vegetable outlet is also planned to expand the retail element of the business.
