MORE than 600 businesses and homes were plunged into darkness today (Tuesday) when a power cut hit the Market Place area of Wisbech.

Some businesses decided to close their doors as a lack of electricity meant they were unable to operate equipment including computers and tills.

UK Power Networks, which is responsible for power supplies across Cambridgeshire, had engineers on site working to restore electricity as quickly as possible.

A fault in an underground cable was blamed for the power cut, which hit at around 1.17pm.

Initially 609 customers were affected but 120 had power back within four minutes, others were restored in stages.

The Citizen office in Union Street was among those left without power for more than two hours.
