STORES the length and breadth of Fenland are offering ‘student kits’ as loved ones leave home for the first time next weekend for University and college.

But the 99p Stores in Wisbech town centre is going that one step further.

It has come up with a novel kit for PARENTS.

And it is launching it next week just as thousands of teenagers from the region prepare to leave home for the first time.

Its’ ‘five items for under a fiver’ kit comprises:

– Four good old fashioned “women’s handkerchiefs”, which sell like everything else at the surging single price point retailer at 99p.

– A biscuit jar.

– After-shave or perfume.

– Commiseration (or celebration for having flown the nest) 99p “bubbly” (non-alcoholic sparking fruit cocktail drink).

– Giant shopping bags new on shelves which say: ‘Keep calm – and go shopping.’

The brand new kit - rolled out on Tuesday - will this year sit alongside the value brand’s standard ‘student survival kit’ which includes a hangover remedy, a pack of condoms and an alarm clock.

“We have been doing the student kits each August and September for a few years and these have been extremely popular,” said 99p Stores boss Hussein Lalani.

“But we have had inquiries from parents asking ‘Why not one for us too?’ It’s only mums who have made these requests but we have thrown in our 99p after-shave - we have a wide range of different bottles – as I’m sure dads will not have to be hiding them so much. We have also put in the biscuit jar for the same reason.”

The rapidly expanding value brand 99p Stores has 201 branches across England, Wales and Ireland, with a family of around 2M weekly customers. It recently announced it was creating 3,000 new jobs and 100 brand new stores.
