Almost half of the workforce at Kier Construction in Wisbech are at risk of losing their jobs after the company announced plans to centralise at Waterbeach, near Cambridge.
Up to 40 office-based jobs are at risk at the company, which has been in the town for 84 years, although the 50 site-based staff are not affected.
Consultation with staff is ongoing and the company is not yet saying how many people will be made redundant. Kier Eastern MD Graham Howe said it was a “really difficult” decision to make.
The announcement came after Kier reached agreement on a £221m takeover offer for East Anglian-based services contractor May Guerney. The takeover will see around 200 job cuts across both companies where services overlap.
