In response to an approach from a number of those who had been able to trade until recently from a privately-run weekly Sunday market and car boot event on the outskirts of the town, Wisbech Town Council has decided to operate a similar activity in the centre of the town, in the Market Place.

This activity will comprise of a traditional market (of the type operated by the council on the other six days of the week) accompanied by a car boot sale. The traditional market would operate on one half of the Market Place and the car boot event on the other.

The council has desires to improve its markets offer to the public, as well as playing its part in enhancing the vibrancy and vitality of Wisbech town centre for the benefit of all of those who use the town as a place to live, work or visit. It is felt that the operation of a Sunday market and associated car boot event on the Market Place accords with those ambitions.

The town council Sunday market, which will operate weekly between 9 am and 2pm, will commence on May 17.

The launch will coincide with the annual Love Your Local Market (LYLM) event, which runs between May 13 and 23. Once again, the town council will be participating in this national event by having themed entertainment and activities in association with the markets on May 16 and 23.

This year, those two markets will have a Country and Western theme and the activities will include musical entertainment, a Rodeo Bull, shooting gallery, etc; watch out for further details.

Persons wishing to have a market stall or car boot pitch on the new Sunday market will need to book in advance with the council. This can be done by telephoning 01945 461333. The cost per car boot pitch (for one car and one table) will be £5 (payable on the day).

Those wishing to book a car boot pitch will be required to give their name and telephone number and details of the car (make model and registration number) which would occupy the pitch. Those trading from a car boot pitch will be permitted to sell used goods only.

Market traders will book their pitches in the same way as for the other daily markets operated by the town council.

Wisbech Town Council is very hopeful that with its “tried and tested” experience of operating markets six days per week, this new venture will be a success and will have the community benefits of providing additional shopping and other facilities available in Wisbech town centre for the public, as well as contributing towards enhancement of the economic circumstances within the town.
