More than 10,000 clients of Citizens Advice in Wisbech are reckoned to have been helped and guided over the past 30 years by a very special volunteer.
The amazing commitment of voluntary adviser Mary Grevatt was celebrated in the Wisbech Citizens Advice office last week.
A letter congratulating Mary from Citizens Advice chief executive Gillian Guy was read out.
At the buffet lunch in her honour, town mayor David Hodgson said: “It’s been a great pleasure to meet Mary and celebrate her achievement. This town, and for that matter this country, couldn’t survive without the contribution of so many volunteers.”
Rural Cambs Citizens Advice CEO, Dr Batul Dungarwalla, said: “At a conservative etimate, Mary has seen 10,000 clients, and given that statistically each one will have brought in four issues over time, that’s an enormous number of problems she has helped people to address!
“Mary perfectly illustrates the saying that ‘those who can, do – and those who can do more, volunteer.’”
Mary had been told she was attending a team meeting and was surprised on her arrival.
She said: “It’s very satisfying work because you know you are genuinely helping people.”
