SHORT mat bowlers from two local clubs got together to make sure patients at a cancer day centre can enjoy games of bowls.

Members of Emneth Short Mat Bowls Club heard staff at Wisbech’s Macmillan and Hudson Palliative Care Centre were looking to buy an indoor bowls carpet and the word was put around.

Members of Sutton St Edmund Club responded donating their spare mat to the centre, which is based at the North Cambs Hospital.

Volunteer driver David Gibbs collected the mat and cut it to fit and staff at the centre said patients are really enjoying playing bowls.

Another volunteer, Harry Smith, has made small ramps so less able patients can still play bowls from their chairs.

The centre wants to thank both clubs for their help in securing and donating the mat.
