A Chatteris man who is raising money for a hospital charity by not shaving for a year was supported by his friends at a jujutsu club.

Roy Court has grown a substantial beard since his last shave on April 24 last year.

Mr Court, who lives in Chatteris, is raising money for the Woodlands unit at Hinchingbrooke Hospital to give something back after his wife Dawn was treated there.

His fundraising efforts were supported on Saturday when colleagues at the Shirindo Jujutsu organised a fundraising training day.

The event, which was held in Emmanuel Church, Chatteris, raised £300 to go towards the fundraising total.

Up to 20 martial artists went along to the training day, which was organised by club instructors Steve Oldale and Robert Parker, along with Mrs Court.

Visiting instructor Wayne Porter, from Peterborough, also took part in the training event.

Mr Parker was pleased with the day’s success.

He said: “We had a really good turn-out.

“Roy was happy and had no idea we had organised this.

“He thought he was coming along for a training day with me but was shocked to see a room full of people there to help him out.

“Roy is not a fan of the beard as he says it is itchy!”
