Councillor Carol Cox, chairman of Fenland District Council, has sent out a Christmas message.
She says: “As we celebrate the festive season, I look back very fondly on my first year as chairman of Fenland District Council. It has been memorable in all sorts of ways. I have been made so welcome by many other councils when I have attended their civic receptions and services.
“I have also enjoyed many other special events held for charity, including Proms in the Park in Rushden and a Victorian murder mystery evening in Boston.
“Throughout the year, I have been ably assisted by my deputy, Kay Mayor, and I much appreciate her support.
“One of the year’s highlights was the VJ Day memorial service in August. It was the first time we had held such an event and St Peter and St Paul’s church in Wisbech was packed.
“I recalled that great occasion earlier this month when we returned to St Peter’s for our annual carol service. It was a privilege to stand in the same church where for hundreds of years many generations of Fenland folk have stood.
“For those of us fortunate to have friends and family with us this year, perhaps we should spare a thought for those who will be alone, and for those in our armed forces who will either be on duty or away from home.”
