Earlier this year, more than 23,500 swimmers took to 615 pools across the UK to raise funds for Marie Curie during Swimathon 2013. Today, Swimathon organisers have announced a massive fundraising total of £2.4 million to date, heading towards what could be a record breaking year.
Contributing to this total, were swimmers from Cambridgeshire, whose efforts at 6 pools across the county, helped raise a fantastic £21,041.69 for Marie Curie. The funds raised for the charity will help people with terminal cancer and other illnesses get the nursing care and support they need at the end of their life.
Swimmers of all ages and abilities helped to raise vital funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care by swimming distances ranging from 5k, 2.5k and 1.5k individual Distance Challenges to Team 5k or Team 1.5k challenges with friends and family. With further fundraising efforts expected to continue from swimmers who took part in Swimathon, Marie Curie will see on-going donations throughout the year adding to 2013’s outstanding total.
Hannah Steele, Community Fundraiser from Marie Curie said: “We are delighted that so many people in Cambridgeshire took part this year and thrilled with how much money has been raised for Marie Curie Nurses who provide free nursing care to terminally ill people in their own homes. We are so thankful to everyone who took on a challenge and raised these valuable funds. “
Duncan Goodhew MBE, Olympic gold medallist and Swimathon President, said: “During Swimathon weekend, swimmers of all levels took to the water to take on their own personal challenge in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. I am happy to say, we are heading towards a record breaking year in terms of fundraising, which is a true testament to all the hard work of our swimmers and their supporters.”
Funds raised by taking on the Swimathon Distance Challenges will help Marie Curie Nurses provide free end of life care to terminally ill patients in their own homes or in one of the charity’s nine hospices across the UK.
