2013 Pride in Fenland Awards night at the Boat House Wisbech Friends of West End Park and Alan Melton

The search is on to find this year’s Pride of Fenland when we honour your local heroes.

For the eighth year running, the Citizen has teamed with Fenland Council to stage the prestigious awards which culminate in a grand presentation ceremony in the month of March when the winners and all those nominated receive their prizes.

Who will follow in the footsteps of last year’s winners? - Emily Shepperson, of Benwick (Good Neighbour), Twin Parks Residents’ Association, of Wisbech (Groups’ winner), Nuala Esfahani, of Wisbech (Young Citizen) and Gillian Goodchild, of Wisbech (judges’ special award).

We want your nominations for individuals, groups and young people who are the unsung heroes and heroines in our community.

The categories are: Good Neighbour; A group/club/organisation benefiting the community; and Young Citizen.

Each category winner will receive a prize of £100 and there are trophies and prizes for the runners-up and certificates to all those nominated. The judges’ special award - which is chosen by the judges from all the nominations - also carries a £100 prize.

• Good Neighbour: This is open to anyone who gives up their time to voluntarily help a group or person. It might be a friend, neighbour, relative or carer. They might help with shopping, do jobs around the home or garden, take someone out who would otherwise be house bound or just visit regularly for a welcome chat.

• Group/club/organisation: Open to any group of people who give up their time to benefit the community voluntarily. The group can compromise any number of people and the judges will be looking for a group which has helped a section of the community or residents in some way other than simply operating as a club. There are many excellent clubs and groups around Fenland but we want to honour that special group which stands out from the rest.

• Young Citizen: This is open to young people up to the age of 25. We are hoping to encourage nominations from young people who are unsung heroes. It might be a young carer, someone who has raised money for charity, a young person who has overcome adversity or someone who gives up their time to help others.
