REVIEW OF THE YEAR: Surprise win for UKIP in May election

County Council Election vote count at the Hudson Leisure centre, Wisbech. UKIP celebrate their results.

Fenland Tories were shocked after UKIP snatched all of the Wisbech seats in May’s county council election.

Cllrs Simon King, Samantha Hoy and Steve Tierney lost their seats to UKIP candidates Paul Clapp, Alan Lay and Peter Lagoda. UKIP also won seats in Marshland South and Chatteris, but in March the Conservatives retained all three seats.

The going looked close at the count, which took place in Wisbech, with not much difference in the votes. But it was disappointment for the Tories.

Simon King was philosophical and Sam Hoy admitted she was not shocked at the result, while Steve Tierney admitted to feeling “sore”. There was some ill-feeling after UKIP candidates failed to turn up to the count.
