Crimestoppers ‘Lost Cats’ advert roars onto radio
Crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers has this week launched a brand new advert which is being played across radio stations in East Anglia.
It follows the launch of the “Lost Cats” campaign last month aimed at tackling the theft of catalytic convertors, better known as “CATs”.
Although metal theft has seen a steady decrease the theft of CATs has seen a dramatic increase in the last three years.
The charity is getting involved due to a lack of information around who is stealing them and where they are going. It is appealing for the public to give them information anonymously – and they could even claim a cash reward of up to £1,000.
Terry Pearce, from the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit, said: “We are funding Crimestoppers to run this campaign because the community really are the eyes and ears of the police. Each force in this area has put a number of measures in place, such as offering CAT marking and prevention advice, but we believe that information from the public could assist us greatly. We appreciate that not everyone wants to speak directly to the Police, so the independent charity Crimestoppers is empowering the community by giving them a voice to help fight crime without revealing their identity.”
Ann Scott, Crimestoppers Eastern Region Manager, added: “I’m pleased to be addressing this crime type. Not only can it be expensive to replace a stolen CAT but it can be extremely inconvenient. I’ve heard of ambulances and charity vehicles being targeted – this is truly despicable and thieves need to be stopped”.
She continued: “You have nothing to fear by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers. We never take any personal details or ask for your name and we don’t trace or record your calls. Those giving information will not have to give a statement to Police or go to court. In the 25 years we have been running we have never revealed anyone’s identity.”
The radio advert follows the campaign launch in January with 120,000 leaflets being put through the letterboxes of homes across East Anglia. The campaign has seen success already with police forces from across the UK wanting to run a similar campaign and a steady flow of information coming into Crimestoppers from the public.
The radio advert starts off with a man sounding sad that he has lost his cat. It then goes on to reveal that it’s actually a CAT convertor that has been stolen and the man appeals for information. It is hoped that this humorous spin on a serious issue will grab people’s attention and encourage them to contact the charity.
