Fenland sees 1,000 less crimes in the last year
Fenland Police are patting themselves on the back after hitting a prestigious crime figures milestone yesterday (Monday).
There have been 1,000 less reported crimes since April than at the same point last year – the best crime reduction in the county – and chief officers are very proud of the work the Fenland policing team have been doing.
Fenland District Commissioner Chief Inspector Mike Winters said: “A year ago, we restructured the policing districts. All our officers have been focusing on Fenland issues, taking on the identity of the Fenland policing team.
“They understand the district, they know what’s going, where and who’s doing it.”
Yesterday’s total crime total stood at 4,600 since April, a massive 19 per cent less than the figure of 5,600 total crimes on February 18, 2012.
Ch Insp Winters is not putting the entire drop down to the restructuring and said there were multiple factors that have contributed to the fall.
The police work with many other agencies, including Fenland District Council, enabling them to work together to target offenders more effectively.
The Integrated Offender Management programme (IOM) has also worked well in the past year. This involves multiple agencies working together to find out the root cause of why offenders commit crime, such as problems with housing or drugs.
“They can co-operate with the support or not,” Ch Insp Winters said. “When they don’t, they receive the full attention of the policing team.”
But the policing team are not resting on their laurels and are continuing to work on dropping the figures even further.
Ch Insp Winters said there are still challenges ahead. Fenland was previously one of the worst performing areas in the comparative tables and its recent success has seen it move up into the ‘average’ area.
