A man who claimed he had a Stanley knife put to his face by two robbers in a Wisbech alleyway has admitted he lied.

Police cordoned off New Bell Lane on Tuesday morning after a 41-year-old man claimed he was set upon by two men and robbed at knife-point and he suffered an injury to his face during the attack.

However, DI Dave Murphy, who led the investigation, this morning (Thursday) confirmed the incident had never happened.

He said: “Good investigation work by local detectives established the man had visited an amusement arcade before the reported robbery and had wasted £100. Checks of local CCTV also negated his version of events and when challenged this morning, he admitted that he had cut himself with a razor blade in the alleyway and had then made up the robbery story.”

The man was issued with a Fixed Penalty Ticket for wasting police time.
