A pair of motorcycling enthusiasts have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Leslie and Elizabeth Payne first met at a bus stop, aged 16, when they were on their way to the Wimbledon Speedway. And following their wedding on April 2, 1953, at Thornton Heath in Croydon, they honeymooned on the Isle of Man.

Leslie, who worked as a rural postman from the age of 14 until he retired in 1990, was a trial rider and took part in the Manx Two Day Trial and other events.

The couple, who moved to Doddington following Leslie’s retirement, had three children – Jacqueline, who sadly died six years ago, Alison and Robert. They now have seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild due at any time.

Leslie credits their long marriage to seeing each other’s point of view: “We always tell each other ‘I love you’ and never look at anything as yours or mine, but ours.”
