A TALENTED young engineer from Wisbech has been awarded a prize in the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards.

Laurie-Ann Benner (21) received the Mary George Memorial Prize for her work promoting engineering as a career for women.

She received her award after being shortlisted for the 2011 awards. Laurie-Ann and her family went to Savoy Place in London in December where the ceremony, presented by TV star Myleene Klass, took place.

Laurie-Ann is a former pupil of Elm Road Primary School and Wisbech Grammar School and works for PEME as a reliability engineer.

She has been involved in many local campaigns to promote careers in engineering, making a presentation at a local secondary school and supporting National Apprenticeship Week by doing a radio interview with KLFM.

In her spare time, Laurie-Ann enjoys skiing and is a member of the Norfolk Snowsports Club where she has voluntarily helped in various freestyle club events. She has also recently refurbished a dinghy which she sails with her husband. Laurie-Ann has helped to raise over £25,000 for various charities through fundraising events.
