PUPILS at Guyhirn Primary School were put through their paces by an ex-Marine on Friday.

Parent Ian Smith, who worked for 13 years as a PT instructor for the Marines, came to school to carry out a tough boot camp for Lions class.

The children puffed their way through a series of exercises on the school field, alternating between cardiac exercises and team building exercises to get them working together.

Teacher Rachael Shuttleworth even joined in, gamely keeping up with the energetic youngsters.

Ian pointed out to the children they were getting it easy – the Marines used to have to do boot camp for 90 minutes at a time, wearing 22lbs of kit and carrying a weapon, adding 15kg onto their body weight.

Ian, whose twins Toby and Rose are in the reception class at Guyhirn, now works as a firefighters in Huntingdon.

The boot camp was part of a team building day, designed to get the children working better as a team within the classroom.

After school on Friday, they all returned for a sleepover.
