Calculating youngsters at Wisbech Grammar School have excelled in the Junior Maths Challenge competition, achieving five gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze awards.

The top pupil in year eight at the school was Oliver Mann (13), from March, with a score of 100 out of 130, and the highest scoring student in year seven was Sam Martin (12), from Wisbech, with a score of 82.

Two pupils from the preparatory school, Magdalene House, Dineth Wijewardena (11), of North Wootton, and Joseph Kooreman (10), from Wisbech, who also obtained silver awards, were among the 129 candidates from the school who entered the contest, which is organised by the University of Leeds.

Head of maths Geoff Howes said: “To obtain gold or silver awards is a tremendous achievement and hopefully many of these pupils will be motivated to go on to study maths or mathematical subjects at universities such as Leeds.”
